Tom (Myspace's founder) claims he still has complete control over the site and says he will not delete profiles or groups that are not obscene or harassing others.

Myspace has always been owned by an internet market research firm called Intermix Media, which always had ownership interest by Fox / Rupert Murdoch, until Fox bought the rest of it. Myspace is basically a marketing database used to track trends among "the youth demographic". The site itself does not make a profit on banner ads. The real money is the marketing database. Hence, the $500 million price tag.

"Tom" is a bit of a myth. He's a real person, but he's not the sole founder. Tom's account has been used as a role account, with automated messages and replies from customer service coming from his account to give the site a friendlier feel. (As yourself, how can one person respond to the customer service needs of a user base of 40 million people? It's impossible.)

Considering the strong ties between Fox and the Republican party, and the recent crackdown on free speech and activism (by prosecuting it as "terrorism"), I would strongly urge all activists to avoid Myspace at all costs. There are plenty of other free services out there that don't have direct ties with the political party that wants you in jail for exercising your right to political activism. Myspace / Fox will not hesitate to hand over your posts to law enforcement. Even if it hasn't happened "yet", are you willing to take that chance?

Find a different free service, or build your own, or find a friend who knows how.

Call me alarmist, but I personally think any activist who uses Myspace is asking for trouble. Keep your Myspace account for showing off your new hair or photos of your cat. Use something else for planning protests and direct action.

Nancy Pelosi will hold a Town Hall meeting the morning of Saturday January 14th to discuss National Security, meanwhile we'll be outside protesting her continuous support for a military war chest. 

While she has personally supported Rep. John Murtha's call for withdrawal from the ground war, she explicitly refuses to use her power as house minority leader to move the Democratic Party Caucus towards supporting even Murtha's resolution; she will not support HR 4232, the bill introduced by Representative James McGovern, to prohibit the use of funds to deploy United States Armed Forces to Iraq. 

Nancy Pelosi consistently votes to spend billions of dollars per year on the war in Iraq while vital public services are being cut at home! 

* Nancy's record: 
1) June 2002: Pelosi voted YES on HR 5010 - Vote to adopt a conference report on a bill that would provide $355.1 billion in appropriations for the Defense Department for fiscal year 2003, an increase of $37.5 billion from 2002. 
Highlights: $71.6 billion for procurement of aircraft, missiles, weapons, combat vehicles and shipbuilding - $114.8 billion 
for armed forces operations and maintenance - $7.4 billion for ballistic missile defense 

2) June 2004: Pelosi voted YES on HR 4613 - Vote to adopt a Conference Report that would provide appropriate $417.8 billion for the Department of Defense for the fiscal year 2005, and for other purposes. 
Highlights: $25 billion for emergency defense spending for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, $120.6 billion for military operations and equipment maintenance, $77.4 billion for the procurement of new weapons 

3) March 2005: Pelosi voted YES on HR 1268 - $81.4 billion emergency supplemental appropriations for Defense Department, war on terrorism, tsunami relief and other programs for fiscal year 2005. 
Highlights: $18.32 billion for procurement of aircraft, combat vehicles, missiles, weapons, and ammunition 

4) June 2005: Pelosi voted YES on HR 2863 - A vote to pass a bill that appropriates $399 billion for defense spending in FY2006. 
Highlights: $116.09 billion for operation and maintenance, including $7.63 billion for ballistic missile defense 

5) December 19, 2005: Pelosi voted YES on HR 1815 - Making appropriations for the Department of Defense for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2006, and for other purposes. 
Highlights: Authorizes appropriations for FY2006 for the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, and Air Force for aircraft, missiles, weapons and tracked combat vehicles, ammunition, shipbuilding and conversion, and other procurement

 Topic: Making the Raw Food Diet Work For YOU!

There is more than just "eating raw foods" to achieve optimum health. There are many subtle nuances and easy tips to greatly improve your results on the raw food diet. Most of these are simple and easily integrated into your lifestyle and diet.

Hugh Cruickshank has been a health inthusiast for more than 30 years. He has worked as a wellness consultant, health coach, and health educator teaching classes on natural health and lifestyle. He has presented leading edge health information to physicians and medical staff at offices and hospitals throughout the Northwest and here in Marin County.

Hugh's knowledge on health is drawn from years of courses, lectures, seminars, tapes, books, and his continuous search for greater health for mankind. Perhaps most important is his own personal experience on the path to achieving optimal health.
 
Cost: A $4 donation (this covers the monthly rent on the meeting space) and bring a raw food dish to serve 10, for each person attending.

The meeting starts at 6:00 pm. PLEASE try to be on time. We eat at 6:15 and our speakers generally start at 7:00. Please bring a raw food dish of your choice to serve 10 people making sure to review the guidelines for food below, or on our web site.

Guidelines for Food:
Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked, steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have been prepared within the temperature guideline above.  Tofu and most seaweeds are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish; be careful about refined oils, vinegar, spices, salt, garlic and onions please...is it raw and truly healthy, etc. Could some things be added later at the potluck by those who want it? Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods preparation books available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you can go to 
htp://www.living-foods.com  for lots of great recipes.  Beautiful leafy greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a winner.  Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun!  If in doubt - leave it out! Call or email if you need ideas or have questions.

Plates and Silverware:
Please bring your own plate and silverware. Not only is this ecologically beneficial, it's a much more pleasing dining experience.

Aldersgate Church is in San Rafael (Terra Linda area), Marin County, California.
It can be reached by US Highway 101 north of San Francisco, exiting at Freitas Parkway just north of the Marin County Civic center, a noted Frank Lloyd Wright designed structure.  Following Freitas Parkway west, turn left on Las Gallinas, then right on Nova Albion Way.  Turn right again on Montecillo, passing Kaiser Hospital. # Jan 14-Dec 9 Canopy: Trees for Palo Alto
A reminder...the first Tree Walk will be January 14 from 10 am - 12 pm.
In 2006, Canopy will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary. As part of the yearlong celebration, Canopy volunteer arborists will be leading a Tree Walk every month. Each Tree Walk will focus on a different area in Palo Alto. The leading arborist will cover the trees in each neighborhood and answer participants' questions. The Tree Walks will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 10 am – 12 pm. See the schedule below for locations. Speaking Out-       For Truth, Peace, and Justice

Sunday, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday,
January 15, 2006         11 am to 1 pm

Americans and people throughout the world honor the life, words, actions
and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.      The day is also the anniversary
of a March upon Congresswoman Anna Eshoo's office in 2002 Demanding a
Congressional Investigation of 9/11.      In 2003, a subsequent March took
place- Demanding an End to the 9/11 Cover-Up,    Repeal of the Patriot
Act,    and the
Pre-Emptive Impeachment of Bush.  Lytton Plaza is also the site of the
weekly Listening For A Change Project, held since October 2001, ( inspired
by a Colombian woman's efforts to defuse violence using the most gentle,
non-violent means possible- "listening.")

Time to speak truths censored by the mainstream press,  truths which birth
the movements for social change, for peace and justice.  A range of
activists will speak, including-  newly elected City Councilman Peter
Drekmeier, Swami Beyondananda, T.U.C.'s Maria Gilardin, Taking Aim's Ralph
Schoenman, Ken Jenkins, John Bass, Ed Rippy, David Kubiak,  Christian
Pecaut, Green Candidates Laura Wells, Tian Harter,  and  Carol
Brouillet  who will publicly launch her Congressional Campaign with a short
statement-

      "Like Martin Luther King, Jr., I have a dream, too.  A dream of a
world, without war, a dream of a world where resources are not squandered
on weapons to protect the rich from the poor , a dream of a world where
there is no need for armies, nor weapons of mass destruction, nor
terrorism, and wealth is measured by the health and well being of our
relationships, our children, our community, our planet.

       "Truth is the first casualty of war.  The official 9-11 story is a
lie.  Lies are used to sell unjustifiable wars.  The PATRIOT Act was
anything, but patriotic, and an attack upon the Constitution, the Bill of
Rights, dissent. Congress was terrorized and pressured into passing it quickly.

        "When we demanded an investigation of 9-11, Bush and Cheney limited
the investigation and had it overseen by the CIA and the men, who should
have been investigated for their role in the attacks, Goss and Graham.  The
systemic destruction of evidence and cover-up culminated in the deeply
flawed official Report directed by Philip Zelikow, part of the Bush
National Security transition team, who co-authored a book with Rice.  The
Commission ignored, omitted and distorted evidence that didn't fit within
the parameters outlined by the official narrative.

       "Congresswoman Eshoo, has supported the official story and
championed the Intelligence Transformation Act, based upon the Commission's
recommendations.

       "It is time to challenge and abolish the National Security State,
Homeland Security, F.EM.A. which seem designed to protect the few from the
many.  False Security depends upon having the most sophisticated weapons,
surveillance devices, and control over communications systems. .  The
obscene military transformation of the country threatens the health, well
being, and civil liberties of its citizen and the world. Real Security
means water, food, shelter, health, and healthy relationships between
people, people and planet.

      "The "War on Terrorism" is a bogus war, a war of terrorism against
all people, a war on truth, a war on freedom, launched by a terrorist
attack which has all the fingerprints of a special operation, a Reichstag
Fire. 9-11 was one of the false pretexts, lies, used to sell the war on
Iraq.

       "We need a national dialogue on Impeachment, the responsibility of
the American people and Congress to rein in a criminal regime that is
capable terrorizing its own people, as well as pursuing illegal, immoral,
wars of aggression against other countries, and stealing elections.

      "I hope that others share my dream for transforming this country from
a violent, dominating bully, to a respectful, helpful friend.

       "I hope that those who share my belief that "Impeachment," Repeal of
the PATRIOT Act, Redirecting Resources from Killing to Healing, are our
best hope for the country and will support my campaign.  I cannot do this
alone; there must be a powerful social movement.  Apathy, Disengagement,
Fear and Cynicism are the forces which perpetuate the war economy,
corporate globalization. Engagement, Empowerment, Hope, Courage, Truth,
Growing Real Communities within our society can transform it to serve and
nurture life.

      "Another  world is possible.  We can do together what none of us can
do alone.  I have no experience within government nor corporations, but I

video and music can be combined to create visual and audio splendor.
She will show two works and do a real time demonstration of the
software used. Multimedia artist Beverly Reiser and video artist Mark
McGothian will show their interactive piece created for Burning Man
called "The Black Hole of Desire."

PROGRAM

Sylvia Pengilly is a composer of both electronic and acoustic music
who is fascinated by the correlation between what the ear hears and
what the eye sees. She was willingly seduced into the world of video
and computer graphics. Her current works amplify the theme of each
work by introducing it to the audience through the eye as well as
through the ear. 

"Patterns of Organic Energy," her music/video work using these
techniques, will demonstrate how video and music can be combined
within a common framework. She will give a realtime demonstration of
the software used. This piece was included in the recent Computer
Music Journal special edition on music and video.  

"The Outer Edge of Possibility," which represents her first
collaboration with composer Michael Rhoades  will also be presented. 
This work is based visually upon a simple silhouette of the human body
which is subjected to amazing transformations that are only possible
through the miracle of software.

She is professor emeritus of the College of Music at Loyola
University, New Orleans. Mathematics and physics, including Chaos
Theory, Quantum Mechanics, and Superstrings, frequently provide the
basis for her works.

Beverly Reiser has been doing multimedia for twenty years, and had an
early piece shown at Centre Pompidou in Paris. For 14 years she was
president of YLEM, and helped design its first web site in 1984-5.
YLEM's prize-winning site was one of the first fine arts sites on the
web. From the Black Rock Foundation she and video artist Mark
McGothian received a commission this year, enabling them to branch out
in their multimedia work. In "The Black Hole of Desire," she and Mark
created a booth at Burning Man where people recorded their desires. It
had a playback feature where people could hear what had been recorded.
This has been combined with sound they collected to make an intriguing
DVD.

Join us at the Cell Space January 20th for an outrageous line up of DJ's donating their talents to raise money and awareness for the antiracist, grassroots movement taking root in New Orleans! Many of us just returned on the Oxygen Collective bus from an intensive three week trip doing relief work in New Orleans. We will share some of our images and stories from our experience, and will donate 100% of the proceeds to the dedicated people at the Common Ground Collective working for justice on the Gulf Coast.

Common Ground Collective formed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, to provide immediate aid and long-term solidarity along the Gulf Coast. Common Ground is a local, community-run organization offering mutual aid and support to New Orleans communities that have been historically neglected and underserved. Common Ground's teams of volunteers include: medical and health providers, aid workers, community organizers, legal representatives and people from all over with broad skills from all walks of life. 

100% of the proceeds will go directly to the needs of residents in New Orleans. The funds will fuel the need for environmental clean up, providing safety equipment for volunteers and residents alike. Money will also go to a school that's starting up in one of the most impoverished areas in New Orleans, an area still void of any school for children. Common Ground oversees these, and other projects, all directly benefiting the residents. Volunteers leave their jobs, their homes, and comfort for weeks on end, anything that we can offer to assist in their safety is a great service. Offering $20 to the cause is a small way to effect positive change in an area in great need.

Playshops will include

dance, yoga, or movement practice.

there to the teachers for the classes you attend, and managed
centrally/anonymously with one check if you wish ($10-25 per class
suggested).  Everyone also helps with one meal.   A couple of spots
are available for those not able to afford much in
donations: you can help by coordinating a meal (shopping & bringing
the food up), setup/strike or otherwise volunteering (contact us for deets).

Limited to the first 20 people to sign up.

Fee allows use of all the harbin facilities (hot warm and cold pools,
hiking, movies, yoga, kirtan ... see harbin.org) from noon on Friday
until 9pm on Sunday.  Indoor camping will be relatively spacious:  for
the 20 of us we'll have two private rooms, three large tents set up,
at least one van, and two large floor areas in the lodge, so everyone
should be able to sleep early/late/when they want and be relatively
undisturbed, and we won't be cramped in like sardines although a
cuddle pile may form :-)

Carpooling?  Yes.   We'll also send a packing list and directions the
week of the event.

I usually only teach intermediate once every two or three months, so if you are interested now is the time to jump in... Two intensive Sunday seminars from 12-2pm. This INTERMEDIATE LEVEL class provides a total of 4 hours of training. Designed for those who want to master more complex moves, create supple transitions and cultivate the awareness of a performer. All students who enroll must already have mastered all skills from beginner class. First meeting focuses on torso and arms. Second meeting focuses on off body moves including advanced jumps, spins, body rolls, tosses. These seminars take moves you already know and has you perform them on many other dimensions and angles. More challenging moves and tricks also provided. Emphasis is on creating more flow in transitions, integrating dance with your complex moves. New Orleans social justice organizers CC Campbell-Rock and Jordan Flaherty 
will speak about post-Katrina organizing in New Orleans and among displaced 
survivors of Katrina in the Bay Area and elsewhere.

CC CAMPBELL-ROCK is Editor at the SF Bay View. She is a native New 
Orleanian and earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Loyola University of the South. A veteran journalist, she has been the managing editor of three New Orleans-based newspapers and  associate editor of a national magazine, and she has penned several hundred articles. Prior to her mandatory evacuation from New Orleans, Campbell-Rock produced and co-hosted “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace,” a live weekly public opinion cable broadcast, for four years. She currently resides in Pleasanton, Calif, and has been organizing with Katrina evacuees in the Bay Area.

JORDAN FLAHERTY is a writer and organizer based in New Orleans, and is part of the editorial collective of Left Turn Magazine. He was in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit the city, and has been writing and organizing in New Orleans since then, working with grassroots organizations for justice, human rights and the right of return. Flaherty's articles from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina have appeared in publications around the world, including Die Zeit in Germany, Clarin in Argentina and Juventude Rebelde in Cuba, and on hundreds of websites including ZNet, CommonDreams, AlterNet and  CounterPunch. This film is a video version of Eric Hufschmid's book, Painful  
Questions.  It provides an in-depth analysis of the Twin Towers'  
sctructure based on a scientific approach as well as careful  
observation and simple common sense.  Eric was the first person to  
bring the mysterious collapse of Building 7 to the attention of the  
public.  Building 7 was a 47-story building near the Twin Towers that  
disintegrated into dust in 7 seconds a few hours after the Towers  
fell.  Eric points out that the same demolition crew was hired to  
clean up the rubble of the World Trade Center and the rubble of the  
Oklahoma City bombing -- another cover up and inside job.  Eric takes  
a very close look at the Pentagon crash and points out a number of  
obvious facts that make the official story fall apart.

Overview
This 14th edition of the Digital Be-In combines its lineage of invention and cultural evolution marking the dawn of the digital age with the emerging green economy and sustainable culture movement. Producer Michael Gosney (whose Verbum magazine began the Digital Be-In during the late 1980s) developed the Paradox conferences on sustainable communities at Arcosanti, Arizona in 1997, 1999 and 2001  http://www.greencenturyinstitute.org/paradox.htm  and formed the Green Century Institute in San Francisco in 2002. Planetwork, founded in San Francisco by Jim Fournier and Elizabeth Thompson in 1998, fosters the creative application of digital tools for positive global change through a series of conferences and monthly forums in major cities. The Green Century Institute and Planetwork are working with several San Francisco Bay Area groups that were involved in the seminal World Environment Day week in San Francisco June 5–11, 2005  http://www.wed2005.org  in the development of this combination daytime symposium, evening rally/celebration and late night dance party. As in the past, the Digital Be-In will reach beyond the physical event with a live netcast, information-intense website and new kinds of exposure and interaction via social networks and blogs. The theme “Planet Code” implies our writing (and re-writing where necessary) the “codes” that define our place within and interaction with the natural environment, and calls upon the high technology community we have encouraged and celebrated over the years to empower the sustainability movement with bold, forward-thinking initiatives.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, 
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. 
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. 
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. 
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. 
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. 
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. 
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. 
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. 
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. 
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. 
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance. 
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the consent of our legislatures. 
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. 
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: 
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. 
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us. 
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people. 
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. 
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. 
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions. 
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people. 
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends. 
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by the Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
